Viniyoga Reduces Stress in a Study Released by Aetna - January 13, 2011 Aetna, a health benefits company announced that early results from randomized controlled pilot studies of two stress-reduction programs showed significant reductions in stress as compared to the control group. Aetna’s review of medical claims’ data showed a positive correlation between costs and study participants’ stress levels, suggesting potential health care costs savings could be realized by reducing stress. A 12-week Viniyoga intervention, developed by Gary Kraftsow of the American Viniyoga Institute (Mary's teacher), was one of the stress reduction programs studied.
Viniyoga Research - Low Back Pain
Sherman, K., Cherkin, D., etal (2011) A Randomized Trial Comparing Yoga, Stretching, and a Self-care Book for Chronic Low Back Pain. Archives of Internal Medicine. Published online October 24, 2011.
This article reports the results of a study that examined the effectiveness of Viniyoga, an intensive Physical Therapy stretching class and self-care booklet for low back pain. Subjects in both the Physical Therapy stretching and Viniyoga groups reported reduced medication use and improved functioning when compared to the subjects who received a self- care booklet.
The lead investigator, Karen Sherman reports “we found that physical activity involving stretching, regardless of whether it is achieved using yoga or more conventional exercises has moderate benefits in individuals with moderately impairing low back pain.”
